What you need for a (visibility) measurement

  • A reel with distance markings (You can mark the line by tying small knots or using a permanent marker to draw hash marks.)

  • A visibility meter

  • A bottom timer or dive computer

  • A slate, wet notes, or a really good memory 😉

  • A buddy

Never dive alone — especially when collecting data.

You can download, print, and laminate your own visibility meter — or pick one up at Scuba Academie or Scuba Support.

  1. Place your visibility meter at the pre-selected location and record the depth of the lowest mark, as well as the temperature and time.
  2. Attach your reel to the visibility meter and pay out the line.
  3. You can do this by either swimming forward or backward along the line:

    • Forward: Swim out a good distance, then reel the line back toward the visibility meter. Continue until the outer (white) marks just disappear from view, while the middle mark remains visible.
    • Backward: Swim backward away from the visibility meter until the outer (white) marks just disappear from view, while the middle mark remains visible. Record the distance from the visibility meter where the outer marks disappeared.
  4. If possible, take a photo of the visibility meter in place to support your data.
